Milestones - 8 weeks and 10 years
08:45pm 23/09/2007

mood: optimistic

8 Weeks
I've now been a non-smoker for 8 weeks. It's been a crazy ride - for the most part it's been positive - everyone's been very supportive and positive about it. The extra money's great and physically I feel much healthier. Even better (for me at least!) my voice is returning - it's stronger and therefore I can put a bit more texture in it. Of course nothing good comes without cost - I'm on medication for anxiety and depression again (though again, this has both good and bad points - I'm sleeping better and it really takes the edge off cravings etc). So overall it's a plus. I'm lucky that I found a medication which doesn't turn me into a zombie or stifle my empathy (when I first had to have anxiety medication back in 2002, the first couple of types I tried really knocked me around). On these I still feel creative, and I don't have that attention deficit thing that some meds give you, so I can really get on with doing some of my art and music stuff.

10 Years
Today is the anniversary of me leaving England. 10 years ago on 23rd September I hopped on a plane at Heathrow after saying goodbye to my mum and dad. So much has happened since then -  on both sides of the world. My Nan died, my sister married and had 3 kids, I got divorced, I became the daddy to two delightful kittens who've grown into beautiful cats. I've lost friends - Terry and Kev, I've made new ones - Sam, Susie, Justin and Shane, Mick, Nums and the kids, Mandi, Squish, Georgie, Dent, Batty and co online... I've got some great toys (my guitars, PC, music gear, the Wii) but miss being able to go to the boot sale and pick up spectrum stuff for pocket change (over here... no spectrums at all). In the last 10 years I've matured as a person and as a songwriter. I've learned a lot about who I am and what makes me tick. I've finally given up smoking just recently as it was a crutch not part of who I am, but conversely I've had painted toenails nearly every day of that 10 years as I realise that that is part of who I am.

I'm 34, and I've now spent a third of my life - the whole of my adult life really, disjointed from my family and my roots. I think I'm doing OK, though there's a few things I really need to knuckle down and do - I really want to own my own house so I'm not renting the rest of my life, I really would like to become a husband/life-partner and a dad - some things you can work towards and then see what the universe provides I guess.

So I cast my mind back 10 years. I remember turning and waving to mum and dad, trying not to cry, going through the gates and finding the first toilet I could to have a cry. I don't remember anything else until getting off the plane at Kuala Lumpur - the sky thick with smog due to the raging fires all over malaysia, and the air heavy and humid as the air conditioning was broken. I remember finding the smoker's lounge as I had a 4 hour stopover. I remember befriending an aussie girl on her way to Sydney after working in England for a year, and another Pom who was off to Melbourne to be with HIS new wife - we bonded over a beer - he had malaysian money but no smokes, I had smokes but no malaysian money. Next memory is coming down through the clouds over Australia - the sun's angle was turning them to gold, it was beautiful. It truely felt like the dawn to end all dawns. The beginning of a new life. I remember the aussie bloke in customs ("Moving to Brissie eh mate? Good onya!"), the sniffer dogs who took an unnerving interest in me ("Don't worry mate, if he's wagging he just likes you"), and the sign that my ex-sister-in-law had printed out welcoming me to Australia which was the first thing that my eyes managed to focus on - then Sandra was there in a wheelchair as she'd just had an operation. Then going over the Gateway Bridge heading for Wynnum - I didn't even see the city that time though it was right there in front of me from the bridge - I only had eyes for Sandra. That was my first morning in Australia. Of course things changed - things that were astounding (the heat, the blue skies, the laid-backness) became commonplace, feelings changed, situations changed... It's been 10 years after all, everything changes. Even me.

So here's to the next 10 years. May they bring everyone their fair share of happiness and joy, and may the clouds pass without more than a shower.

Giving up - beginning of week 4

Well, this is the longest I've been a nonsmoker since I was a teenager, so hurrah.

It's not been without issues - the worst being bouts of pretty bad anxiety and (thankfully mild) paranoia. On top of this, but probably unrelated, I've had issues with balance and a ringing in my ears. Sam's mum's suggested it could be blood pressure, and others have suggested it could be a middle ear infection. If it doesnt clear up soon, I'll assume it's NOT a side-effect of the anxiety meds and go see a doctor as it's really knocking me around at times.

On Sunday was Lachy's first birthday and we had a little party. Unfortunately I had to leave early (I had to get my laundry done before going to band, plus the dizziness and ringing in my ears was pretty bad) - so I missed out on the sausage sizzle (which got postponed anyway) and seeing Lachy open his pressies which was a shame. Sam was in her element, walking round holding Lachy and James' niece Emily who's another little cutie. Piper gave me big cuddles which was really nice, but Jaelyn didn't pay me much attention at all which isn't like her (though I've not been to visit much recently - and there was also the distraction of the other kids and the food!).

Was getting ready to pack the car when I got a message from Justin - he wasn't feeling too good, so practice was postponed for a second week - though tomorrow we're going to do a reconaissance mission to suss out some of the venues with jam nights we want to play.

Tonight theres a severe weather warning (90kph winds and so on) so I'm staying in and watching Time Team and Mythbusters curled up on the futon whilst munching on warmed up pizza (and probably fishfingers or something). I got soaked walking from work to the car, so I'm looking forward to a cosy evening with fun telly and comfort food before an early night with a DVD.

06:58pm 13/08/2007
Well, I'm feeling a lot more human this week! Everything seems to be going fine - though I've noticed I have more craving for pizza than previously... Probably not really related :*)

I've finished the sudoko on my DS game, so I'll have to find a new version to play or something to take its place. Not much else happening at the moment - it's show day Wednesday so I'm going to the confectionary warehouse to stock up on chocolate covered coffeebeans and taking Sam so she can get her "alternative-to-Ekka" showbags.

  THE INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Leave me a comment saying anything random--like your favorite kind of sandwich or something you remember from long ago or something you bet I didn't know. Something random. Whatever you like.
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. It will go on and on and on and that is what makes it a meme!

(Interesting questions BTW dawni)

1. What was the first movie you remember seeing?

I'm not sure what order this was in, but the first movies I remember seeing are:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture.  As in the first one. My mum wanted to see it and took me with her. It was still on in the cinema (way before we had a video recorder) so it would have been 1979 and I'd have been 5 or 6. I don't remember much about the experience (I probably fell asleep) but I remember the cinema had red chairs. Oh! And the veegerr bit.

Watership Down. This would have been the first film I asked to go and see. I liked the video shown on Top Of the Pops (BBC TV) that went along with the song Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel. I sang the song a lot too I seem to remember. The film came out in 1978 and again I saw it in the cinema - with both parents I think - I'd have been 4 or 5. My memory tells me that I saw Star Trek first, but given that I saw both in the cinema it's possible I'm muddled ;)
Yes, I cried at the end.

Star Wars. Yes this was released in 1977, but I didn't see it in the cinema. It's the first film that I remember watching on television (though I'm sure there were plenty of others that I watched before - the bond movies, it shouldn't happen to a vet etc) the BBC and ITV used to roll out a platter of Star Wars, Bond, Indiana Jones etc movies every christmas, and my memories of christmas always include watching these with my family along with christmas specials of my favourite series (the Allo Allo ep with the geateau in the chateau for instance)

2. Who was your first celebrity/character crush?

All my mates were crushing on Charlene (Kylie) or Scott (Jason Donovan), but not I. Oh no. I had to be the odd one out and have a crush on one of the girls on "the other channel"'s Neighbours-rival Home and Away.  The character's name was Lynn, and she was one of the original foster kids who lived at the caravan park (remember this was 1988, o I was 15... ) She was the quiet, cute one. And yes she did the pigtail thing and the barefoot thing.

I also had a bit of a thing for Sophie Simpson (Rebekah Elmaloglou's character). I'd never seen a croptop before, and it was the first you saw of her in the show.... big eyes, long hair and a croptop with smiley faces on it if I remember correctly.

This said I never really did the crushing on celebs/characters thing.... until I saw Buffy and fell in love with Allyson Hannigan.

3. Who is your favourite all-up character and why?

Wesley Crusher. He's dreamy.

OK OK , just joking.

I think at the moment my favourite character in a TV show is Abby in NCIS. She's intelligent, funny, sensitive and not afraid to be herself.

In a book it'd be either Tony Hill (one of Val McDermid's characters) or Ginny Weasley. Tony because he's got an incredible mind yet he's very damaged and vulnerable - though he doggedly struggles to maintain a facade of normality. Ginny, because she set her sights, bided her time, and got who she wanted. When that faltered , she held onter her dream, kept on believing, and was finally rewarded with her dream becoming reality.

I find these characters inspiring - in different ways of course - sticking to your guns and not swaying in the face of adversity, and aspiring to better yourself through overcoming personal demons. Being comfortable in being yourself.
Of course I love Willow from Buffy to death, but a lot of that's cos she's (or at least originally was) the small, quiet cute pigtailed one with red hair and fuzzy girly jumpers (and a fluffy smiley backpack). Yes, early (pre-witchy) Willow reminds me a lot of Dawni in some ways, but I had a thing for Allyson Hannigan back before I really knew Dawni. I even named one of my cats after her character. Before anyone wonders, no, I love Dawni because she's Dawni, NOT because she's reminds me of early Willow.

4. Who is your favourite villian and why?

Dr Evil from Austin Powers. Why? Cos he wants sharks with frickin' "lasers", uses quotation fingers, and doesn't nibble his kitty. No, not even a little bit.

5. What is the most random thing someone has ever said in your presence?

Well, Dawni's said random stuff quite often (usually it's the continuation of a conversation from an hour or more earlier).. once context is re-established it makes sense again though, so I guess it can't really be considered random. During her sleep a couple of months ago she said (in a bloody scary voice) "Now.... now starts the dying...." at least that's what it sounded like. Took me a while to get back to sleep after that. Hopefully she was just dreaming about changing her hair colour....

Thinking about it, the oddest thing happened the other day when I went to the shops to get a CSI:NY DVD and see if Dawni had finished her shopping. On the way from the car to the DVD shop, a girl walked up to me and said "you asshole". I have NO idea who she was, and looking around, there was noone else I could see that she could be talking to. That's pretty random I guess!

I just got back from coffee and as I sat down, someone at the next table said "so it's about that big and they put it into you... and yeah it felt pretty good". Now that was funny :D

Giving up: Day 9
12:01pm 08/08/2007
Hurrah, I'm finally feeling much more like myself again. The cravings are rare, don't last too long and aren't unbearably intense anymore. Last night I stayed up on the PC a little later than I have done the last week (previously I've gotten a bit jumpy sat there with no cigarette - it was a big trigger, as was driving). I spent long enough at the PC to convert the songs Justin and I recorded at our practice on Sunday into MP3s.

These recordings were done using my new toy - a Zoom H4. To keep it brief, I'll gag Megsy. The H4's like a tape recorder that uses memory cards (SD cards like you use in phones) instead of tapes. It has very good built in microphones, and options to alter the sound recorded. You can also plug a guitar into it, and record that with or without effects.

The songs came out really nicely, and I sent copies of them as Mp3s to Sam and Mandi. I've not sent songs to Sam for a while as she likes to read the lyrics (due to unclear recordings of the vocals mainly I suspect). These are nice and clear, and I finally have the words to most of them too (these days songwriting tends to be lyrics by Justin and music by me - though I have some of my own in the works too).

Next week I hope to be feeling "myself" enough (ie not getting the shakes/ADD anymore) to start playing the jam nights again. We've had a few weeks off due to my not feeling up to it due to the anxiety caused by giving up the smokes, and a couple of weeks of turning up to what we thought was a jam night but eventually we were told it wasn't (it only took them a couple of weeks of us turning up with guitars and asking to play for them to tell us...)

Sam's recently reintroduced me to Neopets. When I first met her online back in 2000 or so, I signed up to Neopets at her suggestion but never really did much with it. Recently I've heard giggles and odd computer soundtracks from her room and when I went to investigate I found that Neopets has evolved and has a million really cool games... Of course I signed up again! Last night I spent an hour or so throwing snowballs at people (but avoiding faeries), thwapping a plushie with a bread stick, and trying to match symbols into groups in a puzzle game. Yes, I'm already hooked.

Anyway, it's my lunchtime so I'm going to eat another unfeasibly large triple-chock cookie and drink some ice coffee whilst perusing a couple of UFO websites.

Then it's back to looking at vendor patch alerts, virus warnings and so on (but part of me will be dodging snowballs in Neopia)

Giving up: End of week 1
06:28pm 06/08/2007

mood: optimistic
Well, one week of not smoking! I'm very proud of myself. It's been hard, and I apologise again to Sam for a hundred things this last week (at least).

For the first few days, I was feeling pretty disjointed - as if I was watching myself on a TV screen and not completely in control of everything that was going on - like the addiction itself had a personality and was pulling the strings sometimes. Very disconcerting. I'd forgotten that feeling (it happened back when I was married and I was trying to give up for Sandra).

This time I'm doing it for myself though - though to be honest there's times when I don't care about the health benifits etc. I've been pretty depressed parts of the last week. I'm hoping it'll be worth it in the long run. The original reason for giving up this time was so that Sam and I'd have a better chance at conceiving (I was always going to give up if Sam got pregnant, but this "in preparation for trying" as it were). So I guess in some ways it's become some sort of icon - something I can achieve and not feel such a loser about. I've been married - it lasted three and a half years. I had a brief relationship after that which was pretty disasterous, and then five years later Sam and I got together. In february, she asked me to marry her. I really tried my hardest to make things work this time, I really did - and to be honest, loving her was (is) easy. I tried not to take her for granted, I tried to understand and be supportive when she had issues at work and elsewhere. And now I'm trying to let her do what she needs to do without being a millstone dragging her down. It's hard though - but thinking about it, given how I feel about her, it SHOULD be hard - it's only right that I can't just shrug and say "oh, ok then, whatever".

Heh. Up and down like a yoyo see?

One of the big dissapointments for me since giving up smoking is that coffee now tastes different. Nowhere near as nice. Now, coffee's my other addiction (besides smoking and Sam), so it's a little discouraging! On the plus side though this means I'm drinking (a little) less coffee as well.

Another plus is that I'm feeling a bit more energetic (apart from the times when I feel sleepy, which is no longer around 2am, and more like 9pm which is great cos I'm finally getting a proper night's sleep and spending more time with Sam watching telly) I'm not feeling so out of breath when I get to work from the car, and I've even started taking the occasional short walk at work at morning tea/lunchtime so that I get out of the office.
I'm also considering buying a bike again - though I won't have anyone to ride with now. I'm just not big on doing things on my own - I refuse to go to the cinema or a restaurant on my own for instance. On the other hand I prefer doing things as a couple with my partner or as a small group.

I think the cats are happy about the smoking stopping too. I woke up this morning with both mogs sleeping on me - and it's happened quite a bit recently. I'm also happy that Sam's clothes and hair will no longer smell like she's been stuck in a chimney. Sorry Peanut, I didn't even realise how bad it was until I gave up - I could only smell cigarette smoke on things when I came indoors from outside, and even then it wasn't *bad* - not like now.

Tonight, I went round and emptied the ashtrays. I'll get some shake and vac etc etc and give the place a good going over soon to get it smelling nicer too.

Anyway, so after a week, the giving up is going pretty well. Once I've completed the process, I'll probably start saving up to get my teeth sorted out, although I'd much rather be saving up for a deposit on a house. With an indoor laundry and dishwasher. Just in case.

Giving up: day 4
12:03pm 03/08/2007
Day 4.. So far so good today, but last night not too long after I posted here, I had a bit of a meltdown. Not happy about that. From now on I'm changing patch and taking my tablet as soon as I get home from work.

Earlier I bought a cookie. A huge cookie. But the craving it was going to tackle went away before I started eating it. I've got an odd urge to drive home during lunchbreak (now) and give it to Sam, but that could be misconstrued as creepy or something, so I won't! If it survives the afternoon I can always give it to her later.

I think I just want to leave the office for a while - so I'll go for a walk in a bit.

Day Three
04:40pm 02/08/2007
Things are getting easier - I still get cravings (though these are fairly easily handled by tic-tacs or similar), and I get the shakes occasionally which has amused colleagues. I'm lucky that I have my own office - I just shut myself in and shake away in private LOL

No entry for yesterday as I was so tired all day that I had a very early night. This meant that I had to let Justin down (we were going to check out a jam night we want to play). I felt pretty bad about it, but I was suffing yawn and shake attacks and would have a) felt pretty selfconcious in a bar and b) been unfit to drive at times. I'll make it up to him somehow.

I'm trying to find things to do in place of holding a cigarette in my hand. Currently I've got pretty much a drawer full of chupa chups and tic-tacs at work, and at home I'm doing things like reaching for the guitar, painting my toenails or when the craving gets really bad (as it seems to when I get tired), I'll grab a shower. Sudoku and Counterstrike are also helping as distraction techniques.

Giving up: Day 1
05:02pm 31/07/2007
It's affecting me odd ways. I managed until lunchtime with no problems whatsoever, then after lunch I started getting cravings. Went and got chupachups and so on which helped.

This time round, I have no friends that smoke (unlike 7 years ago when almost all my friends did), and as smoking in bars is banned now, I don't have to worry about being surrounded by smokers at gigs anymore.

Around 3pm I started feeling very tired, so was glad to leave work around 4:30.

Came home and Sam'd gone out. Started worrying irrationally about how she was as she'd not left a note to say she was going out etc etc. Calmed myself down (but note to self that I might need to go back on the anxiety meds if I keep fretting about irational crap) and Sam got back about 5 minutes later.

Now listening to Damien Rice (the '9' album, fact fans) and feeling mellow again though I think I might have dinner and watch Time Team then go to bed early.

So I'm going OK. Just wish I'd done it a year ago - would have been a lot easier I think.

Giving up
05:01pm 30/07/2007
So today I finally managed to get up the... courage? perhaps not quite that, but it took some effort anyway... to buy some nicotine patches. I'm giving up. After 15 years. And it's scary.

Yes I've tried several times in the past, but it wasn't particularly for *me*. This time it is.

My smoking was a part of the reason my marriage failed, and possibly has some bearing on my current "single" status. and I've hated the habit since then, but have been unable to stop. The last time I tried, I put on a lot of weight, suffered panic attacks and eventually had to be medicated for anxiety - however that time I was using Zyban to give up. At the time it was the stop-smoking wonder-drug. I was one of the first wave of people using it to give up, and the side-effects were only becoming known. Having an (at the time) undiagnosed anxiety disorder and taking zyban wasn't a good idea.

This time I'm using the clear patches. I start them tonight.

Just before Dawni and I broke up, I remember cuddling up to her and smelling the smoke in her hair. That's when I realised I had to do something sooner rather than later. I'd been waiting for her divorce to come through - we were then going to be trying for a child and I'd always said I'd quit for that (ie it wasn't conditional on the divorce, I just needed the "cause" of becoming a Daddy to give me a foundation to jump off from)

Since the breakup, quitting's been on my mind even more. Not because I think it'll change her mind about leaving, but because her leaving's given me cause for self-reflection. This was one of the things I saw in the inner-mirror that I didn't like. In these days of strong anti-smoking feeling, nicotine screws your life up more than just health issues. It's no longer seen as attractive (quite the opposite - even to me as a smoker). It's considered antisocial rather than social as it was back when I started. More and more health propeganda (sorry, but whilst I'm sure there's a lot of truth in what they say, there's still a lot of bias) paints smokers as outcast morons (and ironically the majority of stop-smoking ads seem to trigger smokers to light up - I've noticed it in myself as well as others) - and people in general seem to reinforce that image - and I'm not bagging on the non-smokers (well mostly - the idiots that sit in designated smoking areas and bitch about the smoke deserve the derision they receive) - I'm talking about the stupid people who smoke while pregnant or around children. People that deliberately smoke in non-smoking areas. It's tricky to stop smoking, but it's not hard to find somewhere away from nonsmokers and kids to smoke. And as for smoking mothers? Sorry, but I have nothing but the highest contempt for you.

It is an addiction. It is hard to give up, but I feel strong enough to fight it this time - emotionally and physically.
